Flare stars in the Pleiades. V.
Abstract
Results are presented for photographic observations of stellar flares in the Pleiades region. Twenty new flare stars and 62 recurrent flares of known flare stars have been detected on the basis of these observations and inspection of previously obtained photographs. The total number of known flare stars in the Pleiades region as of May 1, 1976, is found to be 469, with a total of 1089 flares. Two-color photographic and UV observations of 21 flares are discussed which indicate strong 'bluing' of the flare emission near maximum light as well as a certain amount of postmaximum reddening. Some data are provided on seven slow flares observed in the Pleiades region, and it is estimated that there are of the order of 1000 flare stars in the Pleiades. Large differences among the average flare frequencies of the various flare stars in the Pleiades have also been detected.
