Design characteristics of Spacelab and opportunities for utilization
Abstract
Subsystems of the European Spacelab, which will be one of the principal payloads of the Space Shuttle, are described. Attention is given to the module structure (including the floor, subfloor and racks), the pallet design, the active and passive thermal control systems, the electrical power supply, the command and data management system, the airlocks and the instrument pointing system. Among the applications foreseen for Spacelab are: high-energy astrophysics; stellar, solar and planetary astronomy; atmospheric, ionospheric and magnetospheric physics; space processing (including automated furnace operation for crystal preparation); and life sciences.
