Variable time steps for simulating transient liquid flow by method of characteristics
Abstract
An algorithm is proposed which, in the computation of a large fluid system by the method of characteristics, allows using the small time step required by the smallest line in a system only in regions where it is necessary, so that larger lines can be simulated with significantly larger time steps. The algorithm entails interpolations and extrapolations at the line boundaries, but the increase in computation time or error incurred thereby is compensated by the savings in time or error decrease due to elimination of interpolations between the line grid points. The improved computational accuracy of this algorithm is illustrated by calculating the pressure response at a point in a test system.
