On the origin of the radio and optical radiation from Markarian galaxies.
Abstract
The radio and optical properties of Markarian galaxies are discussed on the hypothesis that they experience bursts of star formation with a characteristic time scale of 10 million years. It is found that the distribution of the Markarian galaxies in the (U-B), (B-V) diagram, as well as in a corresponding diagram involving the radio flux, may be attributed to this mechanism. Tests for this model are proposed, and the need for further observations at optical, infrared, and radio wavelengths is pointed out.
