Reduction of AC losses in high temperature superconductors
Abstract
The feasibility of Nb3Ge being used as an ac superconducting power transmission cable mater was studied. The program was to measure ac loses in available samples of Nb3Ge and find under what conditions the loses can be reduced to 10 microwatts.sq cm at 15 K. Tasks of the program were: (1) make ac loss measurements on Nb3Ge; and (2) give metallurgical treatment to sample surfaces to reduce losses. Once a correlation is found between ac losses and the sample surface configurations, the surfaces have to be changed to reduce losses. The most effective way to accomplish annealing, polishing, etching, etc. is to prepare different surface configurations in the deposition process.
