Self focusing of laser beams in plasmas and semiconductors
Abstract
A description is provided of the phenomenological theory of the field-dependent dielectric constant, taking into account the effective dielectric constant, the pondermotive force, the heating of carriers by a Gaussian electromagnetic beam in slightly and fully ionized gases, and the nonlinearity in the dielectric constant of a magnetoplasma. Attention is given to the kinetic theory of the field-dependent dielectric constant, steady state self-focusing of electromagnetic beams in plasmas, nonsteady state self-focusing, the growth of instability, and experimental investigations on self-focusing.
