Soft X-ray amplification in a laser-produced plasma - A review and prognosis
Abstract
An investigation is conducted concerning the possibility to observe soft X-ray amplification directly in a laser-produced plasma medium. The suitability of a laser heated plasma for producing an amplifying condition is considered. A description is given of several mechanisms which can produce X-ray excited states in a plasma. The measurement of laser plasma conditions is discussed, taking into account techniques based on the use of extreme VUV radiation and the utilization of soft X-rays. Attention is also given to questions related to the design of X-ray laser experiments.
