METEOSAT S-band/UHF transponder design and mission tests
Abstract
The paper examines the design and mission test results of an S-band/UHF transponder equipment designed to provide the necessary communications channels on board the European Meteorological Satellite (METEOSAT). The transponder employs an all solid-state approach and double conversion principle with an IF frequency in the range 45-65 MHz. The routing, branching, and combining of the channels as well as the interfaces with antennas and other satellite subsystems are discussed. The transmission quality of the digitally modulated signals is tested by measuring the bit rate error. The tests conducted confirmed the feasibility of the selected design and showed that the transponder performance is well within the predicted limits.
