Low-noise front ends for satellite communications receivers
Abstract
The low-noise front end in an earth station receiver must be selected considering performance and cost factors associated with each candidate device. The receiver sensitivity factors are discussed in terms of available system G/T using parametric amplifier, GaAs FET amplifier and mixer front ends. Higher frequency systems are compared to present 4/6 GHz satellite communications receiver systems in terms of the low-noise devices available to the designer. Emphasis is on the primary performance characteristic of each device, viz., noise temperature. Cost and performance trends in the future are also presented. The results shown are for devices which are actually in production at present or will be in the near future.
