Gyroscopic stability coefficient of spin-stabilized cone cylinder projectiles of P3C shapes
Abstract
The development of a practical method is described which allows the coefficient of gyroscopic stability of spin-stabilized projectiles to be determined with a very good approximation. The method is applied to the particular case of the homogeneous cone-cylinder projectile. The extension of the method to more generalized projectile shapes (ogive-cylinder projectiles, projectiles with particular internal structure) is possible. The particular case of a homogeneous cone-cylinder projectile launched with the gun of the 30L80 type from a rifled barrel at an angle of rifling of 7 deg 30 min is treated as an example. Theoretical and experimental results are compared and found to be in excellent agreement. Modifications made to the nose of the cone-cylinder projectile in view of its operational use remain without effect on the coefficient of gyroscopic stability.
