Floating zone electrophoresis facility for Spacelab, phase A study
Abstract
The feasibility of developing a general purpose floating zone electrophoresis facility for Spacelab was studied. Topics dealt with include the preliminary theoretical analysis of the floating zone phenomenon, the proposed sounding rocket experiment series, a first Spacelab mission electrophoresis facility, and a projection of the general purpose facility. The baseline interface characteristics of the early mission facility and of the postulated multi-user facility are: volume 0.18 resp. 2.5 cu m; mass 35 and 350 kg; power 0.1 and 3.0 kW; peak power 0.13 and 4.1 kW; control data 30.0 and 100 bps; and monitoring data: 250 bps for multi-user facility. The budgetary price indication (January 1976 rates) is 1,225,000 AU for the period mid-1976 to end 1980.
