Signal processing using surface acoustic wave devices
Abstract
The paper describes the most important components of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices and examines SAW device applications in signal processing. Uniform and nonuniform interdigital transducers, various multistrip coupler configurations, and the reflective array compressor are described, and the SAW properties of some commonly used piezoelectric materials are summarized. SAW fabrication techniques are briefly reviewed, and the performance of several SAW devices is examined including that of frequency filters, oscillators, matched filters, convolvers, long delays, and memories. Basic features of a number of systems applications of SAW devices are described, including coherent pulse compression radar, electronic countermeasures, spread spectrum communications, air traffic control, nondestructive testing, and network analysis.
