The cost and possible timing of synthetic liquid fuels from coal
Abstract
The paper assesses the applicability of available processes of obtaining synthetic liquid fuels from coal, along with their investment and operating costs. The available processes are classified as pyrolysis, indirect liquefaction via gasification, and direct liquefaction. Pyrolysis is not discussed because of the relatively low yield of liquid relative to the char production. Emphasis is placed on the capabilities of the donor solvent process, the solvent refined coal process, and the H-coal process. No commercial light products from coal are expected before 1987 and probably no more than 100,000 BPCD by 1990. Acute difficulties in funding the development of new coal liquefaction technology are predicted.
