The transition to turbulence in jets
Abstract
Experimental studies were made of the transition to turbulence in submerged jets and wakes. Both homogeneous (air-air) and inhomogeneous (helium-air) jets were investigated. The results lead to the hypothesis that two mechanisms are involved in the emergence of fully developed turbulence. Qualitatively new phenomena can occur when perturbations of different scale interact. An analysis is made of the development of a small-scale turbulence in a flow with a constant velocity gradient. Satisfactory agreement is found between theory and experiment.
