Immiscible flow by finite elements
Abstract
A finite element approach to a two-phase frontal displacement problem is described. The solution method is based on the Galerkin method for spatial discretization and an iterative semi-implicit incremental formulation in time. It is easily extended to more complex multi-phase flow problems including the effects of compressibility, gravity, and capillary forces. Several one- and two-dimensional examples of application are included in order to illustrate the feasibility of the solution method.
