National measurement system for the physical properties of atoms and molecules

The interface with the user community is explored, and questions are raised concerning the roles of the measurement of atomic and molecular properties as an element of the national measurement system. Recent changes in the technological and economic environment which affect all of atomic and molecular physics are recognized. The functions of NBS atomic and molecular physics programs, especially as they relate to this interfacing role and the uniqueness of the NBS fullment of the role, are considered.
