Acquisition of an unknown frequency signal using a phase locked loop
Abstract
A detailed analysis is presented of the behavior of a second-order phase-locked loop acquisition device. The acquisition is achieved by linear sweeping of the VCO frequency, the stop-sweeping decision being made by a coherent detection of the input signal amplitude. All theoretical results are confirmed by an experimental study. A set of curves giving the probability of successful acquisition versus the frequency sweeping rate are given for different signal to noise ratio conditions and different values of the false alarm probability.
