Extension to passive sounder study. Common Attitude Pointing System (CAPS)
Abstract
The Common Attitude Pointing System (CAPS), which could satisfy the scan/stabilization requirements of most passive atmospheric sounders on Spacelab, is described. The capabilities and characteristics of other pointing systems were considered and their use rejected. Various options were considered for the control system and size of CAPS. A design is presented for a floating (i.e. entirely gimballed) reference system, which would carry a package of instruments weighing about 200 kg. The instruments would be mounted in a canister, providing a controlled thermal environment. Estimates are given for development time and costs.
