Integrated electronics progress and application
Abstract
Restructuring of the electronics industry and of engineers' duties by the advent of integrated circuitry, and subsequent restructuring with the arrival of microprocessors on the scene, are reviewed. IC standardization and computer-aided design are outlined. Major advantages of microprocessor-based architectures are highlighted (costs cut, flexibility, greater functional capability, greater reliability with fewer components, self-diagnosing capability), and added advantages of new microprocessors operable over the full military range (from minus 55 C to plus 125 C) are indicated.
