SOI and SITU arrive
Abstract
The construction of a Satellite Identification and Tracking Unit (SITU) with tracking and Space Object Identification (SOI) sensors is a Canadian contribution to the NORAD space mission. Planning procedures, which include the analysis of launch data, orbit trace, elementary data, radar signatures, optical signatures and optical imaging, are discussed together with the factors involved in the choice of the construction site. A briefing on the radar SOI, (the recording and analysis of a radar return) and optical SOI are given. The SOI telescope which will be able to distinguish targets 2000 times fainter than those visible to the naked eye is described together with the Baker-Nunn camera for the tracking role. The control circuits for the system are also discussed.
