Abstract
The frequency of occurrence and range of luminosities of galactic clusters are examined and attention is drawn to contrasting viewpoints on clusters. Information on the population of the local group of galaxies is summarized, including two prospective candidates, one detected in the IR spectrum (1968) and another detected at 21 cm on the galactic equator (1975). The relationship between mass, luminosity, and the stability of galactic clusters is probed, and evidence for expanding unstable clusters is juxtaposed against evidence for stable clusters obeying the virial theorem. Dwarf clusters and giant clusters are seen as coeval. The brightness distribution and distribution of galactic types and motions, in addition to the origin of clusters, are viewed as outstanding problems.
