Antenna systems of the Lebedev Institute BSA radio telescope
Abstract
The engineering design of components and subsystems of the Lebedev Institute (FIAN) BSA (large scanning antenna) radio telescope facility are described. These subsystems include: (1) dipole feeder system (radiators, transmission lines, dipoles, matching transitions between lines, balancing devices); (2) phasing system with discrete remote-controlled phase shifters and connecting coaxial cables; (3) RF trunk transmission lines with electrical length adjustments; and (4) multibeam pattern shaping system incorporating a Butler phasing matrix, a ray shift switch, and a line electrical commutator. Telescope sensitivity was the watchword in the design of all the subsystems discussed, with attention also given to reliability, ease of beam control, low cost, and shortened construction time.
