High gradient magnetic separation: Single wire studies
Abstract
A large number of ferromagnetic strands packed into a flow chamber with a high magnetic field imposed are the centers of magnetic gradients and the collection points in filters used in the kaolin industry. Photographs and hot-wire anemometry were used to examine the rate and shape of deposition in a single collection wire in the magnetic field until saturation. Three cases were considered: where the magnetic field, the collection wire, and the fluid flow are all mutually perpendicular; where the fluid flow and the magnetic field are parallel and both are perpendicular to the collection wire; where the fluid flow and collection wire parallel and both are perpendicular to the magnetic field.
