Performance and control with lift modulation of hypervelocity entry vehicles
Abstract
The performance of any lifting and non-thrusting vehicle, flying under prescribed constraints inside an exponential atmosphere was described. The problem was formulated for a spherical, homogeneous and non-rotating planet with the vehicle descending along a longitudinal plane. The angle of attack comprised the only means of controlling the trajectory. A universal drag polar related the variable lift-drag characteristics, while a set of non-dimensionalized state variables eliminated the need of knowing the physical characteristics of the vehicle.
