A finite element formulation for heat transfer by conduction and natural convection in a melting or solidifying material
Abstract
A solution procedure based on the finite element method was developed for the solution of problems involving heat transfer in axisymmetric regions in which a phase change is taking place. Heat transfer is by conduction in the solid phase and by conduction and natural convection in the liquid phase. Galerkin's method was used to express the governing system of partial differential equations in a form amenable to the development of a weak solution via the finite element method.
