A dynamical theory of stationary self-focusing of laser beams
Abstract
This work has provided the following contributions to the field of self-action of powerful laser beams: (1) a treatment of the effect of saturation of the nonlinear response of matter on the spatial behavior of the laser radiation; (2) an account of the equilibrium criteria for a stable self trapped laser mode and the frequency of stable oscillations about equilibrium; (3) a discussion of the state plane representation of self-focusing which leads to a clear cut picture of the phenomenon without having to solve the equation of motion; and (4) a generalization to the case of a laser beam propagating in an active medium, including the effect of a constant gain or loss on a self-trapped mode in the adiabatic limit.
