Nonlinear-optical experiments with guided CO2-laser radiation
Abstract
The reported investigation has the objective to transfer the light-guidance techniques of integrated optics to the CO2-laser frequencies of the intermediate infrared region. A study is conducted concerning the possibility to use thin epitaxial germanium films, deposited on GaAs substrates, for the guidance of lightwaves in the case of CO2 laser radiation. Attention is given to a demonstration of the guidance of CO2-laser radiation by the considered Ge/GaAs waveguides, measurements of the attenuation of the guided lightwaves, the determination of the coupling efficiency, the conduction of nonlinear-optical experiments in the waveguides, and the preparation and the characteristics of the Ge films.
