Interaction of an external disturbance with a turbulent flow
Abstract
The calculations of Reynolds and Hussain (1972) on the mechanics of an organized wave in turbulent shear flow are checked and refined and the interpretation of their experimental data (Reynolds and Hussain, 1970 and 1972) is critically analyzed. A model is proposed that takes directly into account those terms in the equations of motion which describe the interaction of the disturbance with the turbulent pulsations. The advantages of this approach over the use of models of turbulent viscosity are demonstrated.
