The supernova remnant W44 and its surroundings.
Abstract
Contour maps are presented for the CO and H2CO emission from the dense molecular cloud near the supernova remnant W44. The data are used to investigate the energy and dynamics of the remnant's expansion into its surroundings, to determine the ambient conditions around the remnant, and to examine the parameters of the expanding remnant. The existence of the dense cloud is confirmed, and it is suggested that this cloud has a small bright core with a fainter extension over a broader region. It is concluded that the supernova and its remnant have not yet significantly affected their surroundings and that the recent expansion has been distorted in one direction by the remnant's encounter with the dense cloud.
