Optical waveguides
Abstract
The basic principles involved in the operation of optical waveguides are examined. Most of the optical waveguides utilize effects of total internal reflection. Propagation conditions in films are investigated, taking into account aspects of attenuation and film modes. Attention is given to raised strip guides, embedded strip guides, a prism coupler, a planar film lens refocussing a film-mode beam, a strip guide directional coupler, the field characteristics of the dominant mode in cladded core fibers, and losses of a single-mode silica fiber with borosilicate cladding.
