The distant solar wind
Abstract
Empirical measurements and theoretical models of the solar wind beyond the region delimited by the orbits of Venus and Mars are discussed. Models of the 'quiet' solar wind at great heliocentric distances, interactions between the solar wind and the interstellar medium, closing of lines of force, interaction of the solar wind and neutral hydrogen gas, and magnetic field measurements are dealt with. Termination of the solar wind at 50 AU heliocentric distance, the shape of the heliosphere confining the solar wind domain, charge exchange between neutral H and solar wind protons, slowing down of the solar wind and temperature rise at the Jovian orbit, and direct solar wind observations at 5 AU with the aid of Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 deep-space probes are discussed.
