The optical constants of polyoxymethylene.
Abstract
Polyoxymethylene (POM) has recently been suggested as a possible constituent of interstellar grains. This paper presents laboratory measurements of the optical constants n and k for POM in the wavelength range from 0.4 to 14 microns. In the infrared, results were deduced by measuring transmission curves through films of differing thickness. The principal absorption bands are centered at 3.48 and 9.09 microns, with peak k values of approximately 0.1 and 0.2, respectively. There is a series of closely-spaced bands between 7 and 12 microns. In the visual and near-infrared, n was measured directly by the Brewster-angle method and was found to follow a normal Cauchy dispersion curve; k is very small in this region. There is no structure in the data which could account for the diffuse interstellar absorption bands.
