Kinetic modelling for laser applications
Abstract
Kinetic equations are developed that describe the gas in a lasing cavity. Vibration-rotation transitions, velocity changing elastic collisions, as well as the anisotropic interaction of the gas and the lasing radiation are considered. These effects are then discussed with particular reference to the N2-CO2 laser. In addition, this approach is then extended to nonlinear radiative events such as those that appear in the classic three level atom or molecule. The relation of these nonlinear processes to isotope separation and 'parasitic' gain in a three level system is discussed.
