Characteristics of the interaction of cosmic ray hadrons
Abstract
Statistical data on the interaction of hadrons with energies between 1 and 1000 TeV are now available from studies of extensive air showers at mountain stations. Using these data, the effective cross section for inelastic collisions of nucleons with atmospheric atomic nuclei was determined from the number of primary protons after their passage (without interaction) from the atmospheric boundary to the observation level. Plots showing the characteristics of nuclear interactions and the spatial distribution of hadrons in extensive air showers are presented and discussed.
