A multilayer target method for investigating the composition and energy spectra of particle fluxes
Abstract
Multi-layer foil targets have been flown on Soviet spacecraft of the Kosmos, Soyuz, and Zond series to investigate sporadic particle fluxes in the magnetosphere and to measure the flux of isotopes of inert gases in the solar wind. The energy spectrum of a given component is determined by measuring its concentration at different depths in the target after return of the target to earth. At its present level of development, the method shows promise for the investigation of variations in the composition of the solar wind and determination of the flux and energy spectra of He-3, He-4, and H-3 in flare fluxes at energies below 10 MeV/nucleon.
