Acoustooptic interactions between guided optical waves and acoustic surface waves
Abstract
Highly efficient, large bandwidth acoustooptic deflectors have been demonstrated by using acoustic surface waves to diffract guided optical waves. The basic principles of the acoustooptic interaction between guided optical waves and acoustic surface waves are reviewed. Device parameters of thin-film acoustooptic deflectors are discussed, and criteria are established for the efficiency of the various thin-film deflectors. Current experimental results are reviewed.
