Further studies of soft decision error detectors for the Gaussian channel
Abstract
Two new classes of error detectors making use of symbol reliability information (soft decision error detectors - SDED) are introduced. One class of simple error detectors is studied for Hamming codes, another with a low probability of undetected errors is examined, and comparisons are made with hard decision error detectors (HDED) and other types of SDED. Error detection algorithms are developed. In the first class of SDED, syndrome information is employed and only one reliability number is used per codeword and compared to a threshold value. When the threshold is properly selected, a HDED can be replaced by a SDED with negligibly increased repeat request probability but greatly reduced probability of undetected errors at large SNR.
