Effects of refractive index gradient layers on tropospheric links
Abstract
Refractive index gradient layers are shown to have an effect on the transmission loss of troposcatter links. Transmission loss is given in terms of scatter angle determined by ray tracing, and ray trajectories are given for a theoretical model of a gradient layer superimposed on an exponential troposphere and for measured refractive index profiles over the Kanpur-Nainital link. A negative gradient layer close to the transmitter is found to decrease transmission loss, while positive gradient layers increase loss.
