Measurement of angle-dependent radiant intensity of LEDs
Abstract
Directional characteristics of the radiation emitted by LEDs, and techniques for measurement and display of related information, are investigated. Proper selection of photodetector, spectral response of LED and of photoconductor, and SNR in a measurement circuit with LED and semiconducting photodiode are discussed. Representation of directional characteristics as a function of one variable (angle) in axial symmetry is presented. A two-stage approach to determination of the angular variation of the LED directional characteristics is outlined for the case where the angular aperture is unknown, with an estimate of the solid angle of observation (by direct empirical observation if possible) followed by the appropriate measurements.
