Nuclear reactions in the sun
Abstract
The crisis in solar physics precipitated by the discrepancies between predictions of neutrino yields of solar nuclear reactions and empirical evidence from the Davis neutrino tank (1968) is reviewed, and subsequent revisions of pertinent nuclear reaction cross sections and new hypotheses advanced are discussed. Quark catalysis of nuclear reactions and the existence of relict quarks of negative charge in the sun's interior are mentioned among the conjectures put forth. Limitations of neutrino experiments to date and types of neutrino detectors required in further experimentation are discussed. The status of the principal solar thermonuclear reactions is viewed as not in doubt, but the importance of solar neutrino experiments and theory for astrophysics and fundamental physics is stressed.
