X-ray heating. II. The reflection effect in Scorpius X-1.
Abstract
The periodic optical light curve of Sco X-1 is discussed theoretically. A binary model with X-ray heating of the nondegenerate companion fits the observations for an orbital inclination of 5 to 15 deg. Orbital eccentricity is ruled out as the cause of the periodic light variation. If the emission lines are formed in the neighborhood of the degenerate star, then the nondegenerate star does not fill its Roche lobe.
