Photometric evidence of circumstellar gas and orbital elements for the Algol system.
Abstract
H-alpha and H-beta wide- and narrow-band photometry of Algol was obtained on 23 nights, mostly in 1970 and 1971. A total of 2425 observations was secured. Orbital elements were calculated from the wide-band data and were found to be consistent with previous solutions. H-alpha and H-beta indices were computed, and an analysis of these reveals the presence of circumstellar gas in the vicinity of the hot component. This material is estimated to extend to a distance of 2.6 times the radius of the hot star and probably fills the Roche lobe of this component.
