Possible properties of pre-outburst FU Orionis stars.
Abstract
Summary. Under the assumption that the rapid brightenings of V 1057 Cygni and FU Orionis by more than five magnitudes (photographic) can be largely explained in terms of the dissipation of a circumstellar dust envelope, observable properties of stars in an evolutionary stage immediately preceding such outbursts are discussed, and criteria for finding them are proposed. These criteria are low-amplitude variability, advanced T Tauri type spectra, strong infrared excesses, and, possibly, OH, CO and H2O radio emission. FU Orionis stars are expected to have masses in the range three to ten solar masses. A list of possible candidates is also given. Key words: pre-main-sequence evolution - T Tauri stars infrared excesses
