Baryon number instability and the matter content of a chargesymmetric universe.
Abstract
It is proposed that, as a chargesymmetric universe cools through the hadron era, it undergoes a phase transition which breaks the underlying chargeconjugation symmetry, giving rise to separate regions of matter and antimatter. The matter content of the universe at the critical temperature is calculated using the statistical bootstrap model. The observed value of the entropy per baryon is deduced therefrom and shown to be related to the ratio of electromagnetic to stronginteraction couplings. The relation of these results to recent work on the same subject is discussed.
