Antenna arrays using high gain element radiators. Rider 1: Helix study
Abstract
C band helicies of 4 lambda length were studied and assessed as radiators in a 19 element array. Two versions of the helix, with and without a dielectric support surrounding the lower part of the helix coil, were studied both in the array environment (active) and alone (isolated). For the version with dielectric support, simulations of array performance were made with a computer program. The simulation showed a maximum peak gain of around 27.7 db appearing in the direction to which the element patterns were squinted. The beam pointing errors were quite small, or less than 10% of the beamwidth.
