Phase velocity measurement in dispersive materials by narrow-band burst phase comparison
Abstract
A description is given of a through-transmission method for measuring the phase velocity of ultrasonic waves in dispersive materials. The method is based on a phase comparison of narrow-band bursts. The measurement of the phase velocity has possible applications in the study of the elastic properties of composites. The analysis of pulses and bursts is considered, taking into account a rectangular pulse, a cosine-squared pulse, and a narrow-band burst. The effect of velocity dispersion on a burst is discussed and attention is given to the phase-comparison system.
