Integrated dielectric resonator and antenna millimeter-wave structures
Abstract
A theory is outlined which yields physical insight into the wave processes taking place inside integrated semiconductor resonator and radiator devices. The information obtained will aid in the design of antennas for millimeter-wave transmitters and receivers. The configuration of a wedge excited by the mode structure of a two dimensional dielectric slab is examined. A review of the mode and ray structure in the slab and in a wedge both of constant reflection coefficients is given. Approximate integral expressions for the field in an actual wedge is developed. Reflections from the wedge air-dielectric boundaries are included by using multiple Fresnel plane wave reflection coefficients. The method of solution allows for the convenient tracking of beams which follow ray trajectories as they journey toward the wedge apex, reach a caustic and are reversed.
