Error control coding
Abstract
Error control coding is a signal processing technique which adds structured redundancy to a data sequence in order to detect and, in some instances, correct errors which may occur during transmission. The RF design of a baseline system consisting of an air-to-air tactical data link is described to illustrate some of the basic compromises which must be considered and to show how coding gain can be useful. The basic types of error control codes are presented with examples of hardware realization. The baseline system is used as a reference in discussing code selection rationale.
