The different intermittent phenomena in flows and their measurement by conditional sampling methods are considered. Some of the different intermittencies that can be defined in flows are reviewed, and general definitions are given. Detection criteria and measurement techniques are analyzed in detail for boundary intermittency. Some experimental results are given on the intermittent structure of the boundary of a turbulent boundary layer.
