Optimum design of PSK demodulators
Abstract
Decision-directed loops for use in PSK demodulation are investigated; they are seen to have advantages over other techniques, such as the squaring and Costas loops. The performance of the decision-directed PSK demodulator can be optimized by proper choice of detection filter bandwidth and a bit error performance can be achieved within 1 dB of theoretical. The recent development of charge transfer devices (CTDs) and surface acoustic wave (SAW) circuits permits performance approaching that of the optimum maximum likelihood synchronizer.
